Yukon Mining Industry Raises Over $50K for Community Causes
Whitehorse, Yukon – The territory’s mining and exploration industry came together during last week’s Yukon Chamber of Mines 39th Annual Yukon Geoscience Forum to raise funds for two key community initiatives. Over $26,000 was raised at the Yukon Geoscience Forum Awards Banquet through a silent auction to benefit the Yukon Imagination Library. This Rendezvous Rotary family literacy initiative provides all Yukon children with one free book per month from their birth to the age of five for a total of 60 books before they enter Kindergarten. “We thank all the mining companies and individuals who took part in the silent auction to benefit the Yukon Imagination Library,” said Yukon Chamber of Mines Past President Claire Derome and Yukon Imagination Library Chair. “Their generosity is greatly appreciated and will help give so many Yukon children and their families access to books and the opportunity to learn to love reading.” An additional $25,000 was raised through the ‘Rock Hounds’ silent auction at the Yukon Gold Mining Alliance (YGMA) Open House to benefit the Yukon Mines Legacy Foundation. This silent auction consisted of more than 50 unique fossils and rock specimens from around the world and mining-themed Yukon art. The Yukon Mines Legacy Foundation’s initial project is the creation and management of the Ross River Recreation Trust Fund to help the community rebuild and replace its arena and equipment, destroyed in a fire earlier this year. “On behalf of the Foundation, I would like to thank the YGMA for hosting our Rock Hounds auction and all who contributed and bid,” said Yukon Mines Legacy Foundation Chair Janet Lee-Sheriff. “Some of the proceeds will be used to build a warm up shed at the outdoor rink in Ross River that is currently replacing the arena during its reconstruction.” For more information about the Yukon Imagination Library, please visit www.facebook.com/yil.yukon.imagination.library.
