Yukon Imagination Library Promotes Literacy with Fundraising Event
Whitehorse, Yukon – The Yukon Imagination Library will promote and celebrate family literacy and its community champions with its ‘Dolly Day’ fundraising event on Thursday, September 29 at 5:30 pm at the Whitehorse Visitor Information Centre. ‘Dolly Day’ will feature local bluegrass band Second Cousins, the Yukon premiere of the film ‘The Year Dolly Parton Was My Mom’ presented by its writer/director Tara Johns, a message from Dolly Parton, appetizers, hospitality and a celebration of the program and its champions. The Yukon Imagination Library – an initiative of the Rendezvous Rotary Club and its community partners – provides Yukon children with one free book per month from their birth to the age of five for a total of 60 books per child by the time he or she reaches Kindergarten. The Imagination Library was developed in 1996 by country music legend Dolly Parton to address low literacy rates in her home state of Tennessee and is now implemented throughout Canada, the U.S. and the U.K. “At present, the Yukon is the only Canadian jurisdiction to offer the Imagination Library to all its children in both Whitehorse and in our rural communities,” said Yukon Imagination Library Chair and Rendezvous Rotary member Claire Derome. The overwhelming popularity of the Yukon Imagination Library is anticipated to grow from the 800 children registered today to 1200 in 2013 for a distribution of 15,000 books that year alone. “With the support of the community and individual donors, we are working to ensure the sustainability and growth of this important literacy program so that all Yukon’s children and their families may benefit,” continued Derome. ‘Dolly Day’ tickets are $20.00 and available at M&M Meat Shops and Arts Underground. All proceeds benefit the Yukon Imagination Library. For more information about the event and the Yukon Imagination Library, please visit http://www.facebook.com/yil.yukon.imagination.library.
